Q.R. Riviera Maya — Section 4 of the Maya Train, which runs from Izamal to Cancun, has 200 kilometers of completed track, according to Javier Mays. The director of the National Fund for Tourism Promotion (Fonatur) also stated that all of the rail required to finish that part of the project is on hand.

According to May, the organization in charge of section 4 also owns 90% of the sleepers and 80% of the ballast. Only 39 kilometers remain in competition out of the 200 kilometers of completed electrified double track, according to him. In addition, a train workshop is being constructed at the Cancun Airport, and Valladolid is home to a base for track maintenance.

The section will span 239 kilometers of electrified double track through nine municipalities and 17 towns between the states of Yucatán and Quintana Roo, according to his most recent comprehensive report on section 4.

The project, which also entails the construction of Visitor Centers and Maya Train Hotels, also includes the improvement of the archaeological zones at Chichén Itzá and Ek Balam.

“True natural paradises and areas with great archaeological wealth, such as Chichén Itzá, Holbox, Isla Mujeres, the beaches of Cancun, the Sotuta caves, the Lagartos River, and Las Coloradas, to name just a few places,” he said, “will be available to Maya Train passengers in section 4.”

This train’s section will have two stops at Nuevo Xcan and Leona Vicario in addition to three stations at Chichén Itzá, Valladolid, and Cancun Airport as part of a test run scheduled for July.
