Tulum is preparing to celebrate one of Mexico’s most meaningful traditions with five days of colorful festivities, cultural performances, and community activities.

From October 30 to November 3, 2026, Day of the Dead in Tulum will bring together locals and visitors for Paseo Tulum Renace con sus Raíces, a celebration featuring traditional altars, catrina costumes, live performances, fire shows, and local gastronomy.

Organized by local businesses in collaboration with the municipal tourism department, the event aims to celebrate Mexican heritage while bringing new energy to Tulum’s streets and businesses.

Paseo Tulum Comes Alive with Tradition

The main festivities will take place along Calle Centauro at Paseo Tulum, transforming the area into a lively cultural gathering space.

From October 30 through November 1, visitors can enjoy free outdoor activities between 6:00 PM and 11:00 PM, with competitions beginning at 8:00 PM.

Here’s what to expect:

DateMain Activities
Friday, October 30Opening ceremony, fire show, Catrina and Catrín costume contest, traditional dance performances
Saturday, October 31Pet costume contest, fire performances, folkloric dance, and awards
Sunday, November 1Traditional altar contest, cultural performances, awards, and closing ceremony

The artistic program also includes performances by Colombian group Alma Otita and the Chac Mool dance collective, alongside a gastronomic showcase celebrating local flavors.

Additional activities have been mentioned for Tulum’s hotel zone and cancha maya, although detailed schedules for November 2 and 3 have not yet been announced.

Catrinas, Creativity & Community Spirit

One of the most anticipated highlights is the Catrinas and Catrines Contest, where participants bring Mexico’s iconic Day of the Dead figures to life through elaborate costumes, makeup, and artistic expression.

Open to adults between 18 and 50, the competition celebrates creativity, originality, and characterization.

Families and animal lovers can also enjoy a pet costume contest, featuring outfits inspired by Mexican traditions. Organizers emphasize that all costumes must respect the animals’ safety and well-being.

These activities add a playful, community-centered atmosphere to the celebration.

Traditional Altars: Honoring Those We Remember

At the heart of Día de Muertos is the ofrenda, a traditional altar created to honor loved ones who have passed away.

This year’s altar competition invites participants to share a meaningful story dedicated to a person, family, or cultural tradition.

Each altar should incorporate symbolic elements such as cempasúchil flowers, candles, and papel picado, reflecting the beauty and significance of this Mexican tradition.

The winning altar will receive a $5,000 MXN cash prize.

Beyond the competition, these displays offer visitors an opportunity to understand the cultural meaning behind Día de Muertos: remembrance, family, and the celebration of life.

A Celebration Beyond the Beaches

While Tulum is internationally recognized for its Caribbean coastline, ancient Maya ruins, cenotes, and wellness lifestyle, events like Día de Muertos reveal another side of the destination.

Traditional music, artistic performances, local cuisine, and community gatherings connect visitors with the cultural identity of the Mexican Caribbean.

The celebration is also part of broader efforts to encourage tourism, support local businesses, and bring more cultural experiences into Tulum’s public spaces.

Organizers expect more than 2,000 attendees throughout the five-day celebration.
