Tulum, Q.R. — After a private meeting between the Secretary of National Defense (Sedena) and municipal authorities of Felipe Carrillo Puerto, Tulum and Riviera Maya, information of the upcoming airport was released.
The airport, which is expected to be constructed by the end of 2023, will be operational in May of 2024. It will be built on 1,200 hectares of land with a capacity for four million travelers per year.
The “Felipe Carrillo Puerto” International Airport in Tulum, as it has been named, will have a 10 kilometer long commercial corridor and be integrated with the current highway system and sections 5, 6 and 7 of the upcoming Maya Train.
The airport will be equipped with high-end airport services and a multipurpose military base that will be used for security and state emergency services such as forest fires. The airport will also be built to withstand category 5 hurricanes.
According to Toni Chavis, President of the Riviera Maya Hotel Association (AHRM) and part of the May 11 meeting, construction is expected to begin in August and cost around one billion peso.
The private Wednesday meeting was headed by Gustavo Ricardo Vallejo Suárez, who is in charge of the project. Vallejo also headed construction for the Felipe Ángeles Airport in San Lucia.
