Despite a changing tourism market, Tulum continues to leave a powerful impression on travelers. A new international study analyzing more than one million traveler reviews has ranked Tulum as the world’s happiest travel destination, giving the Mexican Caribbean destination a perfect score of 100.

The ranking offers an interesting perspective at a time when Tulum is going through a period of tourism adjustment. International passenger traffic has declined, hotel occupancy has faced pressure, and authorities have introduced new measures to strengthen the destination.

Yet travelers who experience Tulum continue to describe it using one word more than anywhere else: happiness.

More Than One Million Traveler Reviews Put Tulum at No. 1

The ranking was created by Irish travel insurance company JustCover. Researchers analyzed more than one million reviews across 155 destinations around the world.

Instead of measuring visitor numbers or hotel occupancy, the study looked at the language travelers used when describing their experiences. Researchers searched reviews for direct expressions of happiness and compared the results across destinations.

Tulum emerged at the top with a score of 100 out of 100.

Soufrière in Saint Lucia ranked second, while Oaxaca placed third. Las Vegas and Maui completed the top five.

Mexico’s performance was particularly notable. With both Tulum and Oaxaca among the five highest-ranked destinations, the country had two destinations near the very top of the global ranking.

Why Does Tulum Make Travelers Happy?

Tulum offers something that can be difficult to measure through traditional tourism statistics.

Its appeal comes from the combination of nature, history, lifestyle, gastronomy, wellness, and the Caribbean.

Travelers can begin the morning overlooking turquoise water, visit ancient Maya ruins, swim in a cenote, explore the jungle, enjoy internationally recognized cuisine, and finish the day with yoga, wellness treatments, or dinner by the sea.

The study specifically highlighted Tulum’s Maya ruins, natural reserves, food scene, nightlife, and wellness culture as elements contributing to its appeal.

These experiences have helped Tulum develop an identity that extends well beyond the traditional beach vacation.

Tulum’s Connection With Nature Remains Its Greatest Asset

Few international destinations combine natural and cultural attractions as closely as Tulum.

The Caribbean coastline is only one part of the experience. Cenotes, jungle landscapes, archaeological sites, protected ecosystems, and nearby natural reserves give visitors many ways to connect with the region.

This relationship with nature has also influenced Tulum’s architecture and hospitality industry. Boutique hotels, wellness retreats, restaurants, and residential developments increasingly incorporate outdoor living, natural materials, tropical landscaping, and wellness-focused spaces.

As a result, the destination has developed a lifestyle identity that continues attracting visitors and property buyers from around the world.

A Different Story Behind the Tourism Numbers

The happiness ranking arrives during a more complicated period for Tulum tourism.

International passenger traffic through Felipe Carrillo Puerto International Airport declined significantly during the first months of 2026. Domestic passenger numbers also softened.

Hotel occupancy has faced similar challenges.

These figures reflect a tourism market undergoing adjustment after several years of extraordinary expansion. Increased competition, pricing, seasonal sargassum, and concerns surrounding beach accessibility have all contributed to the conversation about Tulum’s tourism performance.

However, the happiness study reveals another side of the story.

Fewer arrivals do not necessarily mean travelers have stopped enjoying Tulum.

The ranking measures how visitors describe their experiences after arriving. Passenger statistics, meanwhile, measure how many people make the trip.

Understanding both provides a more complete picture of the destination.

Tulum Is Already Responding

Authorities have introduced a broad tourism strategy designed to address some of the challenges facing the destination.

The Tulum Renace initiative includes 128 actions across four principal areas: tourism regulation, urban and environmental management, destination promotion, and infrastructure.

Among the priorities is improving public access to Tulum’s beaches. The strategy also seeks to strengthen the destination through new events, improved infrastructure, and greater tourism promotion.

These efforts indicate that Tulum is moving into a different phase.

After years of rapid expansion, attention is increasingly shifting toward improving the visitor experience and strengthening the infrastructure required for sustainable long-term growth.

What Does This Mean for Tulum Real Estate?

For real estate buyers and investors, tourism statistics are important. However, they are only one part of evaluating a destination.

Long-term real estate demand also depends on whether people genuinely want to spend time there, return regularly, purchase second homes, or eventually relocate.

That is where Tulum’s latest recognition becomes particularly interesting.

Being named the world’s happiest travel destination does not guarantee future tourism growth or real estate returns. However, it demonstrates something valuable: Tulum continues to create a strong emotional connection with many of the people who experience it.

That connection has helped transform the destination from a small Caribbean town into an internationally recognized lifestyle market.

From Tourism Boom to a More Mature Destination

Tulum’s next chapter may look different from its previous one.

The explosive expansion of recent years brought new hotels, residential developments, restaurants, infrastructure, and international attention. It also created challenges that the destination must now address.

A more mature Tulum will depend on improving accessibility, environmental protection, infrastructure, service quality, and the overall visitor experience.

The latest happiness ranking suggests that one important ingredient remains firmly in place: people still love being in Tulum.

And for a destination built around travel, lifestyle, and real estate, that may be one of its most valuable long-term advantages.
