Playa del Carmen, Q.R. — Statistics show that Playa del Carmen is one of the cities in the country that is seeing the most rapid population growth. According to Ivonne Aidé Vargas Esteban, who is in charge of the Solidaridad Population Statistics Unit, the city may surpass Cancun’s size in the future years.

According to Vargas Esteban, “It is possible that Playa del Carmen may become even more popular than Cancun.”

According to her, this is one of the primary reasons why it is essential for Playa del Carmen to establish new public infrastructure in front of this growing trend. She claims that in order for the municipality to provide the essential services to the expanding population and to keep the labor demand at a stable level, it is vital for the municipality to properly plan its investments and its infrastructure.

She stated that “we see percentages of increase,” which means that “perhaps a higher investment in infrastructure will have to be done,” as well as “more demand in various occupations,” particularly in the hospitality industry.

“Where population growth has already exceeded the physical conditions of the city,” she explained, “Playa del Carmen could end up like Cancun, where population growth has already exceeded the physical conditions of the city.” Since the municipality of Solidaridad is expanding at a rate of 7.7 percent annually, the highest rate in the country, it is important that they plan new infrastructure to prevent Playa del Carmen from ending up like Cancun.

“What should be done is to start planning the infrastructure of the city so that what is happening today in Cancun does not happen to us,” she said while noting that Cancun expanded with many irregular regions. “What should be done is to start planning the infrastructure of the city.”

According to Vargas Esteban, although their department does not have precise population data, the National Institute of Statistics and Geography does. She claims that they have received a total of 368,698 reports of permanent residents in Playa del Carmen for the year 2022.

According to her, the number given does not take into account the transient population of snowbirds, seasonal employees, or temporary workers.

According to the Inegi, there were 368,698 people living in the year 2022. In the year 2020, there were 333,800 of us. It is predicted that we would expand at a rate of 7.7 percent per year, which would make us the municipality that increases at the fastest rate so that the demand will continue to increase,” she stated.

Because of this, she believes that it is conceivable for the population to double or treble what it presently is, which would mean that it would be larger than the current population of Cancun, for which she did not have current data. The other piece of knowledge that the city does have, according to Vargas Esteban, is that it has an ethnic majority. She claims that the majority of the permanent national inhabitants of Playa del Carmen are from the neighboring states of Chiapas, Tabasco, and Yucatán.

She added that Americans, Guatemalans, Italians, Cubans, and Argentines make up the majority of the tourists in Playa del Carmen. Other common nationalities include Italians and Cubans.
