Riviera Maya, Quintana Roo — Playa del Carmen and Akumal have emerged as the top tourist destinations in Mexico, leading the way with the highest hotel occupancy rates in 2024. Located in the vibrant Riviera Maya, these two hotspots are setting the pace for the nation’s tourism industry, according to Miguel Torruco Marqués, the Secretary of Tourism of the Government of Mexico.

Record-Breaking Hotel Occupancy Rates

Playa del Carmen achieved an impressive average hotel occupancy rate of 89%, making it the busiest tourist hub in Mexico. Akumal followed closely with an 82% occupancy rate, further solidifying its status as a premier vacation destination.

In particular, hotels in the Playacar area of Playa del Carmen saw the highest occupancy, reaching 89.8%. Other hotels across Playa del Carmen also performed exceptionally well, with a 75.1% occupancy rate. Akumal, located in the municipality of Tulum, recorded an 82.8% hotel occupancy rate, securing its position as the second most popular destination.

National and International Tourism Trends

During the first half of 2024, more than 41 million tourists stayed in hotel rooms across Mexico. Of these visitors, 29.4 million were domestic tourists, accounting for 75.1% of the total. Meanwhile, 11.7 million international tourists visited, making up 28.5% of the total occupancy across the 70 tourist centers monitored by DataTur, which provided these figures.

Hotel occupancy across Mexico’s top 70 destinations reached 60% overall. Beach destinations, including Playa del Carmen, saw a higher average occupancy rate of 68.5%, compared to 52.4% in city destinations. Other high-performing areas included Nuevo Nayarit with 80.8%, Cabo San Lucas with 80%, and Cancun with 77.7%.
