The Mexican tourism board (Fonatur) announced that its commencement of the Riviera Maya section of the 1,525-kilometer Tren Maya will begin with several major infrastructure projects that will prepare the area for the next couple of years of construction. The first is the creation and paving of alternative roads around main construction areas along Federal Highway 307, which will keep traffic moving and prevent buildups. These roads should be completed in the next three weeks.

The construction of these new roads will also give authorities time to repair parts of the highway that have and are at risk of collapsing. The entire Yucatan Peninsula sits on a limestone bedrock that is thin enough in some areas to collapse, creating its famous cenotes. In recent years, the highway has given way in a couple of areas, most notably south of Playa del Carmen near Xpu-Ha Beach, and north of Playa del Carmen near Iberostar.

Regarding specific train construction, work will first commence on the overpass bridges that will be necessary for the track to pass through Playa del Carmen. Geologists specializing in transportation engineering have been brought in to ensure that foundations are built to withstand the weight of trains and their passengers without the risk of creating new cenotes.
