Cancun, Q.R. — The federal government and Quintana Roo state government plan to include the light rail system for Cancun in the 2021 budget package. The construction of the Elevated Tourist Urban Light Train would be connected to the Maya Train project. The train is being included to mitigate the effects of the health crisis caused by Covid-19.
Construction of the project would begin during the third quarter of 2021 and conclude in the third quarter of 2022. The 47-kilometer long circuit would be divided into two phases.
The initial phase would cross the tourist area of Cancun from Kukulkán Boulevard to Tulum Avenue, while the second would be a new road parallel to Luis Donaldo Colosio Boulevard, the main entrance to the city and with greater capacity.
The first phase of the project would have 33 elevated kilometers in the Cancun Hotel Zone until the junction with the Cancun International Airport. In the second phase, there would be 14 kilometers at road level in lanes confined to Tulum Avenue and Universidades Avenue.
The terminal is set for the vicinity of the airport with intermediate stations to allow the feeding of passengers. The train is expected to meet a possible demand of 66,800 daily passengers.
