According to the Anahuac Tourism Research and Competitiveness Center (Cicotur), even though air travel to Cancun increased significantly in the United States, Colombia, Brazil, and United Kingdom markets between March and May of this year compared to the same months in 2022.
Francisco Madrid, the CEO of Cicotur, said during a press conference that analyses of tourist activity in the Mexican Caribbean indicate a noticeable slowdown in the aforementioned markets. On the other hand, the Canadian component has grown.
According to him, the Canadian market contributed significantly to Mexico’s 4.5 percent gain in foreign tourism at the end of May, which included about 392,000 more travelers.
But there are explanations for the significant slowdown, especially coming from the US.
He said that individuals were still coping with Covid-19 in the same months of 2022, which contributed to the substantial increase in air travel at the beginning of 2023.
People began choosing other Caribbean locations after Covid-19. According to Francisco Madrid, some of the causes of the shift include the currency rate, the return of regular tourist competition, as well as ancillary factors like the state of the economy and visa regulations for nations like Brazil.
