Riviera Maya, Q.R. — The highway from Cancun to Tulum will be expanded to create room for the upcoming Maya Train project. The announcement came from Raúl Bermúdez Arreola of Fonatur Quintana Roo, who explained that the section to Tulum is part of an unsolicited proposal that has already been submitted to the federal government.
“In this unsolicited proposal, they propose to start the expansion of the highway from Cancun to Playa del Carmen to three lanes due to the need for that road, which is now a boulevard … and with the Maya Train project, the modification to include the railway lines fit perfectly,” he said.
According to Fonatur, the decision of who will tender the project will be made August 24th. The expanded highway would begin just after the Cancun International Airport and run all the way to Tulum, which the agency notes, would provide safety for drivers as well as greater fluidity.
