According to the Mayor of Tulum, three instances in December of 2019 where land-use changes were approved have now been revoked by the city council.
The revocation of land-use changes was approved by Cabildo de Tulum on 1,600 hectares of land, also approved in the conclusion of last year. The argument on behalf of Cabildo, led by Victor Moe Tah, is that the determination was made based on assessing controversy and listening to the community.
City Council said in a statement, the consensus of all the members of the Cabildo resulted in the determination to revoke land-use changes and listen to society. “Complying with the commitment to listen to and respond to citizen requests, municipal president Víctor Mas Tah announced that, in coordination with all the members of the Cabildo of the Honorable City Council of Tulum, they have decided to revoke the minutes of the Cabildo sessions held on December 19, 23 and 24, 2019.”
“The members of the Cabildo heard the voices of the Congress of the state of Quintana Roo, organized civil society, and the citizens of Tulum who expressed their concern about the approved measures.”Then “After a joint analysis and with the consensus of all the members, in the Sixteenth Special Session of the Cabildo, the decision was made to revoke the effects that entered into force on the aforementioned dates”.Due to the areas of environmental frailty, the changes in land use approved back in December stirred up controversy. The density for the implementation of real estate projects significantly increased when irregularities were also detailed in the technical process of these land-use changes.
These adjustments in land use would have put anthropological heritage in danger, in addition to affecting extensive areas of underground rivers with environmental fragility. To properly administer urban order to the municipality, the federation must agree on how to apply the new Law on Human Settlements, Territorial Planning and Urban Development of the state of Quintana Roo, in compliance with the General Law of Ecological Balance and Environmental Protection.
