Tulum, Q.R. — The Business Coordinating Council of Riviera Maya has requested the upcoming Tulum Airport be called the International Airport of Riviera Maya. In a letter addressed to Mexico’s president and copied to state agencies, the council says the name is a destination brand that would be easily recognized by visitors.
“The Riviera Maya destination-brand is strategic and very competitive within tourism marketing, which includes several destinations in the Mexican Caribbean, which are famous worldwide, such as Playa del Carmen, Tulum, Puerto Morelos, Akumal and Puerto Aventuras,” the letter explained.
Lenin Amaro Betancourt, president of the Council said that the arguments presented to the president are solid and well founded. He says “the Riviera Maya brand, which was created in 1998, and, over the years and with great effort, is currently a well-positioned and recognized brand worldwide.”
“On the other hand, Riviera Maya groups together, under a single brand, an extensive range of tourist options for visitors that, in addition to natural attractions, includes accommodations from maximum luxury to community ecotourism.
“It also includes archeology, theme parks, gastronomy, sports and events of international stature, thus breaking with segmentation paradigms and generating visitor loyalty,” he added.
He also said that “the promotion of the Riviera Maya brand is more efficient, has a greater impact and has a greater penetration in the tourism market than the segmented promotion of micro destinations.”
With a territorial extension that spans about 210 kilometers in length, running along the coast of Quintana Roo from Puerto Morelos to Punta Allen, and with more than 58,000 hotel rooms, the Riviera Maya encompasses just over 50 percent of the state’s hotel offer, he elaborated.
Therefore, he said, “baptizing the new Mexican Caribbean airport with this name as a world tourism brand is the best option.”
