Having recently won the project tender for the construction of the 42 train cars that will be used for the Maya Train, Bombardier Transportation Mexico has already released images of how the passenger cars will appear. Each will have a Mayan name, and its own purpose. Three different models will be utilized, one for short-distance trips, one for dining, and one for long-distance trips.
Presented as the standard level, the Xiinbal train is more of a working/commuter train and has amenities like Wi-Fi as well as a dining car and meeting spaces for short-distance trips. The dining train, named Janal, possesses face-to-face dining tables so passengers can enjoy a meal together. Finally, the long-distance train, named P’atal, has reclining seats and even individual sleeper cars complete with showers for those that desire more of a hotel experience.
Scheduled to open in 2023, the first trains are planned to depart from Cancun every 15 minutes. In addition to creating thousands of jobs throughout the area, the Maya Train will connect the entire Yucatan Peninsula and make it more accessible to visitors and locals alike.
