The Riviera Maya offers a variety of cenotes’ with different characteristics, but some of them are not that commonly known and these are the ones I want to talk about. All of these cenotes are of easy access and inexpensive:
Cenotes in Playa del Carmen
JARDIN DEL EDEN
Located only 14 minutes aways from Playa del Carmen and across from Puerto Aventuras, JardÌn del Eden is an open cenote visited as much by locals and tourists alike for its cool water and friendly hangouts. In JardÌn del Eden you’ll find yourself swimming along lovely fish eager to exfoliate your skin, something very odd in the beginning, but quite pleaVirginnt once you embrace it. I assure you, it’s a great experience.
XCACELITO
Cenote Xcacelito has the privilege to be the only cenote located within a two-minute walk from the beach… and what a beach! Cenote Xcacelito comes in a package along with Xcacel beach, which is a place known for its beautiful color and for being a popular spot for the sea turtles to come and nest. To reach Xcacelito, you’ll have to cross a dense jungle and some small wooden bridges just to find one cozy water pond that appears to have been placed by nature like your own natural pool. Believe me, it’s something special.
CENOTE CALAVERA
Meaning “Skull cenote”, has some really outstanding rock formations and it’s refreshing waters offer a welcome embrace to a vast array of divers, from cave-diving certified to first time divers. Once inside this cenote you’ll realize why it received its name, just like a pirate movie, the rock formations give the illusion of a giant skull that lurks from above… a little terrifying, but makes a great facebook cover photo.
