AMLO gives green light to start the Tulum to Bacalar Maya Train construction

Riviera Maya, Q.R. — After a weekend visit to the region, President Andrés Manuel López Obrador has given the green light for the start of Maya Train construction. In a press release, AMLO announced the official start of Maya Train construction along sections 6 and 7.

Section 6 corresponds to the 254 kilometers of Tulum to Bacalar Maya Train, while section 7 corresponds to the approximate 287 kilometers that make up Bacalar to Escárcega.

While in in the region, AMLO also visited the Secretary of National Defense (Sedena) military camps that have already been set up in Campeche and Quintana Roo. Military personnel from these camps will work not only on these two sections of Maya Train, but also on the new airport of Tulum.

While visiting, AMLO thanked the military for their professionalism and highlighted the importance of both projects.

“You know that these projects (…) are for the benefit of our people, of our beloved Mexico. These are not projects for profit, they are truly public works,” he told members of Sedena, explaining that the Maya Train is being built to promote tourism, employment and the development of the southeast region.

“The tourists who come to enjoy the beaches, the beauties of the Caribbean, the turquoise blue, (…) will be able to enjoy the extraordinary wealth that we Mexicans have. The archaeological wealth, the vestiges of the great civilizations, of the great cultures of Mesoamerica,” he said during his speech.

After arriving back in Mexico City, AMLO said that every month until December of next year, when the two projects are scheduled for completion, he will visit the region to review progress.

“We finished the evaluation over the weekend,” he said in a press release. “Every month I will do the same to inaugurate this great work for the benefit of southeastern Mexico in December of next year,” AMLO said.

On Sunday, both AMLO and Quintana Roo Governor Carlos Manuel Joaquín González flew over the ancient Mayan city of Cobá, while touring the Maya Train zones.

“Today, with the Governor of Quintana Roo, Carlos Manuel Joaquín González, we flew over the ancient Mayan city of Cobá. Splendid with its mountains inhabited by jaguars and its lagoons. All this is going to be better known with the Maya Train,” he said.
