Mexico City, Mexico — A parcel of land has been earmarked for purchase by the federal government for the construction of the new Tulum International Airport. The announcement was made by Andrés Manuel López Obrador Monday who said government will buy the 1,200 hectare piece of land where they will build the Tulum airport.
He also said that the new Tulum airport will not be in that municipality, but in the neighboring municipality of Felipe Carrillo Puerto. In a press conference, AMLO explained that the government has already reached an agreement with the Ejidatarios who own the land. He did not reveal a peso figure for its purchase.
“An agreement has already been reached with the Ejidatarios of Felipe Carrillo Puerto and they are going to sell 1,200 hectares for the construction of the new Tulum airport, but the truth is that the lands are in the municipality of Felipe Carrillo Puerto, very close to Tulum,” he said.
He stressed the importance of Tulum with its sea access and archaeological ruins. “So Tulum has, like all of Quintana Roo, a lot in its future and that’s where the Maya Train is going to arrive,” he added.
Hours after the AMLO announcement, the Ejido commissariat of Chunyaxché, Urbano Cen Teh and the President-Elect of the Municipality of Felipe Carrillo Puerto, Mary Hernández, confirmed that the Ejido land will house the Tulum International Airport.
They said an agreement was reached after several meetings and talks between authorities of the National Fund for the Promotion of Tourism (Fonatur) and the Secretariat of Territorial and Urban Agricultural Development with the Ejido of Chunyaxché, adding that the new Tulum airport will be five kilometers from the community of Muyil.
