Chetumal, Q.R. — The complete 1,554 kilometers of Maya Train Mexico, spanning all seven routes, is officially operational. On December 15, 2024, President Claudia Sheinbaum inaugurated the final two circuits in Chetumal, the capital city of Quintana Roo.
Final Sections of Maya Train Mexico Inaugurated
During Sunday’s ceremony, President Sheinbaum and dignitaries, including Quintana Roo Governor Mara Lezama, celebrated the opening of sections 6 and 7. This milestone marks the culmination of the Maya Train Mexico project. Notably, the project was launched under former President Andrés Manuel López Obrador and completed in just four years. The inauguration, held along the scenic Chetumal Bay, was attended by governors from states along the train’s route.

A Symbol of Social Justice
President Sheinbaum highlighted the project’s significance for social justice. Moreover, she emphasized its focus on serving the communities of southeastern Mexico.
“Thus, we can firmly and clearly assure that we continue in a process of profound transformation,” said Governor Lezama during her address. She added, “This transformation includes the Maya Train’s loading stations as part of a New Agreement for the Well-being and Development of Quintana Roo.”
Plans for Expansion
In addition to celebrating the project’s completion, Sheinbaum announced plans to construct two additional train routes. These new routes will connect Mexico City to Nuevo Laredo and Nogales. “The Maya Train is a symbol of the Fourth Transformation of public life in Mexico. Furthermore, starting October 1st, we will expand it with a cargo train and connect it to the interoceanic train,” she stated.

She underscored the train’s cultural and national importance. “The Maya Train tells the world that Mexicans honor their rich history and look forward with hope and pride in our cultural heritage,” she explained. “This train is and will always be a source of national pride, recognizing the indigenous peoples who shaped our past and are the stewards of our future.
