Tulum, Q.R. — In less than a year, Tulum reaches 1 million passengers at its new international airport, marking a major milestone and showcasing the region’s rapid growth as a premier travel destination. This far surpasses initial projections. Governor Mara Lezama celebrated the achievement, calling it a historic moment for Tulum and the Mexican Caribbean. Reaching this milestone in less than a year highlights Tulum’s rapid growth as a top travel hub.
Rapid Growth and Rising Popularity
The airport’s one-millionth passenger, Gerardo Treviño Zúñiga, arrived from Monterrey on a Viva Aerobús flight. His arrival underscores Tulum International Airport’s quick rise as a major travel hub in under a year.
Governor Lezama remarked, “The arrival of our one-millionth passenger underscores the confidence that travelers place in Tulum and Quintana Roo as premier destinations. With over 59% of passengers returning, this achievement shows that we’re moving in the right direction.”
As Tulum reaches 1 million passengers, the airport has become a vital hub, enhancing travel convenience for tourists.
Surpassing Expectations
Initially, the International Air Transport Association (IATA) estimated that Tulum International Airport would handle around 700,000 passengers and 4,500 flights in its first year. However, the airport has already surpassed these figures, completing over 7,790 operations to reach 1 million passengers.
Tourism expert Javier Mendoza commented, “This milestone sets the stage for Tulum’s ongoing growth. Tulum has quickly transformed from a boutique destination to a key travel hub. Both leisure travelers and investors from around the world are drawn to its blend of natural beauty, cultural heritage, and modern infrastructure, like the Mayan Train.”
With Tulum reaching 1 million passengers in record time, the airport’s success highlights the area’s growing appeal and connectivity. This success strengthens Tulum’s position as a key connectivity point for the Mexican Caribbean. The growth not only boosts tourism but also supports local businesses. The upcoming Mayan Train will further enhance Tulum’s accessibility.
