It has been officially announced that Viva Aerobus will be the first airline to offer service out of the brand-new Tulum International Airport.
The government has informed Viva Aerobus, according to the company’s CEO Juan Carlos Zuazua, that the terminal will be ready to operate in April 2024.
Zuazua stated in the announcement that the Tulum flight is intended to bolster the Cancn route, which received five million passengers in 2022, or 25% of the total volume of Viva Aerobus’ travelers.
When Tulum International Airport opens, the low-cost airline will become the only Mexican carrier serving all four international airports in Quintana Roo: Cancun, Chetumal, Cozumel, and Tulum.
Zuazua added that although domestic routes would be Viva Aerobus’ primary focus at first, the company is in talks with Allegiant Air to form an alliance that would allow it to provide service between smaller and medium-sized U.S. cities and the Mexican Caribbean.
Construction, including the clearing of jungle, has begun despite the ongoing environmental assessment of the proposed terminal.
Local activists declared the January 9 opening of the formal public consultation on the airport’s environmental impact to be a sham in February. This was due to President López Obrador’s claim that construction work on the site had already reached 20% completion.
