DreamWorks Riviera Maya . Back at the beginning of May, we published a blog announcing that the plans for a DreamWorks Riviera Maya theme park had been given the go-ahead. The project represents an $800 million dollars investment into the Riviera Maya area and will be seen in both the entertainment and real estate sectors. The positive effects of this investment are expected to be seen throughout Riviera Maya. This is an exciting time for Riviera Maya tourism, and land inspections are already underway!
Mayan Ruins at DreamWorks Riviera Maya
The main focus of the current land inspections is to preserve any historical structures in the designated area. The National Institute of Anthropology and History, or INAH, are tasked with surveying the potential land set aside for this project. The land lies directly north of Playa Del Carmen, close to Maroma beach. As a whole, the project known as the Amikoo Plan will cover up to 115 hectares. However, DreamWorks Riviera Maya itself will only cover 7.5 hectares. The rest of the land will be reserved for 3 hotels with an expected combined occupancy of 1200 rooms, a shopping plaza, a second theme park and even a museum of anthropology itself.
It seems only fitting then that the INAH should inspect this ancient land for Mayan Ruins. Historical sites are frequent throughout Quintana Roo and the Yucatan, with Chichen Itza and Tulum being some of the most visited historical sites in Mexico. Further to this, smaller sites are dotted around Riviera Maya that locals and tourists often bypass without realising. The gated community of Playacar, for example, has a number of small ruins on display.
INAH’s job is to verify is ruins remain on the site. If some are found, they will be protected from construction work. Though, it’s important to note that the finding of Mayan ruins will not impede the construction of the theme park. However, measures will be put in place in order to preserve then.
Beginning Construction
Once the INAH has completed the survey, DreamWorks Studios will be able to begin construction. It is hoped that ground will be broken towards the end of 2017. The planned opening date is still uncertain.
