Q.R. Riviera Maya — The Director of Strategic Management of Fonaur indicated that Sections 1 through 4 of the Maya Train are about halfway finished. The first four portions are little over 47% finished, according to Violeta Abreu González, Director of Strategic Management and Institutional Liaison at Fonatur, who stated this on Friday.

She made the news at the Tourism Consultative Council (CCT) 2022’s First Ordinary Session, which was presided over by Miguel Torruco Marqués, Mexico’s Secretary of Tourism.

Torruco Marqués stated during the conference that the Maya Train will serve as a catalyst for the economy, jobs, and general well-being of the towns to balance out growth and eliminate differences between tourist hotspots and outlying regions.

He emphasized that the initiative will help the southeast, the area with the greatest economic disadvantage, by fostering improved productivity, an increase in economic benefits, the creation of jobs, and the promotion of sustainable development, environmental protection, and land use planning.

According to Torruco Marqués, the train would connect the states of Campeche, Chiapas, Tabasco, Quintana Roo, and Yucatán across 1,554 kilometers of track with 20 stations and more than 190 major tourist destinations scattered along the way.

He stressed that, up from 17th place in the world’s foreign exchange in 2018, Mexico will rank second internationally in the arrival of foreign visitors and ninth in foreign exchange revenues by the end of 2021.

He added that by the end of this year, Mexico anticipates the arrival of 42.3 million international tourists, a figure that is only 6 percent below 2019. “This macroeconomic data tells us that we are on the right path, fulfilling the mandate of President Andrés Manuel López Obrador to make tourism a source of progress, well-being for Mexicans, and a true tool for social reconciliation,” he said.

According to Abreu González, work is being done on 26 archaeological zones, including 11 Visitor Service Centers, as part of the Program for the Improvement of Archaeological Zones.

She also emphasized that the project’s first through fourth portions are 47 percent finished and that its inauguration is scheduled for December 2023.
